Our featured traveler of the month Tara McCalla is on her 6th placement as a Host Healthcare travel nurse. We asked this amazing travel nurse a few questions about some of her favorite things as a travel nurse and about her recruiter Brendan.
Q: If you could have one super power what would it be and why?
A: I would have to choose teleportation so I can travel and see amazing places…without dealing with travel time (or traffic). And who doesn’t want to leave an exhausting night shift and simply teleport to bed??
Q: What has been your favorite experience since you have been traveling?
A: I love that while I’m on assignment, I can take mini trips on my days off. Want to fly to San Francisco for a couple days with a friend? Sure! Simply want a change of scenery? Take a trip to Sequoia. Need a spa day? Drive to Hot Springs!
Q: What has been one of your favorite places/spots you have visited while on assignment?
A: My favorite spot that I’ve visited while on assignment was Hot Springs, Arkansas. Hiking the area was amazing but swimming in the hot spring pools had to be my favorite part! Talk about relaxation!
Q: What made you want to try travel nursing?
A: I wanted to try travel nursing because I wanted to have the best of both worlds (work and fun) while also being able to pay off my student loans. I can proudly say that I have accomplished all 3 of those goals! 😀
Q: What was one thing you were scared of before your first assignment and how did you combat that?
A: I was TERRIFIED to leave the comfort of home and make it all on my own, regardless of what came my way. I remember I kept saying, “But what if I’m not okay?” (Hello anxiety!) I knew I had to push past my fears if I wanted to experience something really cool in life and I was done letting fear rule my life. I admit, I spent many phone calls with Brendan having him ease my anxieties! Brendan was great and helped me. I wasn’t sure I could do it but here I am, making it on my own and loving how empowering travel nursing has been!
Q: What is your guilty pleasure after a long day at work?
A: Oh my goodness, let the judging begin… Right now I am binge watching Greys Anatomy. The medical side of it is so bad it’s become comical (obviously when the patient is in asystole, we defib!) but the drama has me hooked! And who doesn’t need a little McDreamy in their life?? (He dies…I know, don’t remind me).
Q: What is one word that sums up your recruiter, Brendan?
