The end of the year has several months of awareness. September is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness month, October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and November is Alzheimer’s Awareness Month. You might have heard of these diseases but what do they mean? What are symptoms? Let’s dive in.
National Ovarian Cancer Awareness
According to the National Ovarian Cancer Coalition (NOCC), 1 in 78 women will be diagnosed with ovarian cancer. Symptoms can be vague, especially in the early stages, but they will become more intense over time. The most common symptoms of ovarian cancer are trouble eating or quickly feeling full, feeling the need to urinate often or urgently, bloating, and pelvic/abdominal pain.
It’s important to keep in mind that really, all women are at risk for ovarian cancer. The biggest risk factors include increasing age, infertility, personal and/or family history of ovarian, colon, or breast cancer, and genetic predisposition. At-risk women should also undergo regular transvaginal ultrasonography screenings, in addition to annual mammography screenings. Breast Cancer Awareness
While Breast Cancer Awareness Day is on the 31st of every October, it’s an ongoing campaign that starts at the beginning of the month. During this time, you will see floods of pink ribbons and different attire with inspirational quotes to help rally the fight against this disease. There are more and greatly improved treatment options available now. It is this type of positive information that has fueled the strong momentum of Breast Cancer Awareness Month over the years and is a reason why we must continue to take it more seriously. Alzheimer’s is a condition that leads to behavioral problems, in addition to memory loss and difficulty thinking. It’s the most common form of dementia and sadly, is also the sixth leading cause of death in the United States. Some things to look out for include:
- Trouble solving problems
- Difficulty planning and completing tasks
- Confusion as to where they are
- Misplacing things frequently
- Being unable to retrace their steps
- Major shifts in personality and mood
- Memory loss
Although there is no treatment or cure for people with Alzheimer’s Disease, there are things you can do to help, especially if the condition is still in its early stages. Always try to make sure the person is comfortable and safe.
Paying attention to the patient’s environment and simplifying it is key to helping to reduce anxiety, fear, and agitation daily. The whole idea driving the purpose of Alzheimer’s Awareness month is to work to educate the public about the disease.
